THE HISTORY OF STRATTON

It's hard to believe that Stratton, Colorado, once had a famous hotel, the Collins Hotel, where the great baseball player, Babe Ruth stayed. We even had a visit by the great Horace Greeley. I'd say times have changed a lot over the last eighty years. We don't have famous people staying in famous hotels anymore, but we remain a town founded on the right principles. Stratton was named after Winfield Scott Stratton, also known as "Mr. Gold". Not a bad nickname at all! He was known for his unselfish, humble generosity. Something that we all aspire to be known for. We do our best to keep that spirit alive.

Stratton was founded when the railroad came through. Its roots started with the railroad and has grown into an agriculture-based community. The local CO-OP owns several businesses in the town. It owns the Ampride fuel station, the Ace Hardware store, the Car Center, and the NAPA. It is a big employer of many in this town, and it provides many job opportunities for newcomers.
